Veneers in detail

Veneer vs Crown

A veneer is a thin ceramic shell bonded to the visible surface of the tooth. It corrects colour, shape, small chips and slight misalignment without removing much tooth.

Crown covers the tooth completely on every side — it is chosen when a tooth is badly broken down, has had root canal treatment, or needs protecting from further damage.

The guiding rule: do no harm. If a tooth is healthy and strong, a veneer preserves as much of it as possible. Crowning a healthy tooth for cosmetic reasons removes far too much.

* The final decision always rests with the doctor after an examination. We will not place a crown where a veneer will do — or the other way round.

When and how we restore

This is the question we hear most after implant surgery. Here are the steps from the operation to the permanent crown.

Day of surgery
The implant is placed
The surgeon places the titanium implant in the bone. With All-on, and with some single implants, a temporary crown goes on the same day (immediate loading).
1–2 weeks
Soft tissue healing
The wound heals and the swelling subsides. A check-up follows. Nothing is done actively — the implant is getting acquainted with the bone.
3–6 months
Osseointegration
Bone grows into the implant's microstructure. How long this takes depends on the material, the bone and your general health. Straumann SLActive allows a shortened protocol, from six weeks.
After osseointegration
Impression and crown fabrication
A digital impression — no silicone, no plaster. It goes to the dental laboratory, where the crown is milled by CAD/CAM. Fabrication takes 7–14 days.
The final step
Fitting the permanent crown
The crown is fitted and secured. We check the bite, the occlusion and the appearance. You get a tooth that will last for decades — and nobody will guess it is not your own.

The question we hear most

How a crown is fitted on a tooth

Fitting a crown takes two or three visits over two to three weeks. In between you wear a temporary crown and carry on as usual: it holds the shape and colour, and you can chew with it.

The stages

Visit 1. Examination, X-ray, assessment of the root. If there is inflammation inside the tooth, we first treat the canals — a crown must never be used to hide a problem. Then the tooth is prepared for the future crown, scanned, and a temporary crown is placed.

Between visits. The dental laboratory makes the crown from the digital impression. That takes anywhere from a few days to two weeks depending on the material.

Visit 2. Try-in. We check the fit, the colour and — most importantly — how the crown meets the opposing teeth. At this stage things can still be changed, and it is far better to change them now than to live with them for years.

Visit 3. Cementing with permanent cement. A check-up follows two weeks later.

A crown on a back tooth and on a front tooth are different jobs

On a back tooth the priority is withstanding load. Zirconia does that job: it does not chip and it takes a strong bite. Appearance barely matters on a sixth or seventh tooth, so there is no point paying extra for translucency. Zirconia crown — from UAH 7,200.

On a front tooth it is the opposite: less load, but everything is on show. You need ceramics that transmit light like natural enamel — eMax or pressed ceramics. eMax crown — from UAH 12,200; pressed-ceramic veneer — from UAH 17,600.

Ceramic restorations are chosen for the individual tooth, not as "one system for the whole mouth". If a clinic offers the same solution for a molar and for a front tooth, that is convenient for the clinic, not for you.

Full-arch restoration

This is the restoration of a whole arch — when there are no teeth left at all, or only a few that can no longer carry the load. Here we use implant treatment with the All-on-4 or All-on-6 protocol: a full arch is fixed on four to six implants, often with a temporary bridge on the same day.

It is a large piece of work, and to be straightforward: it is planned over months, not "we will fit it next week". It starts with a CT scan and an assessment of the bone — without that, any price quoted is guesswork.

How long a crown lasts

Zirconia and eMax last 10 to 15 years and more when they are looked after. The usual reason for replacement is not the crown itself but what is underneath it: decay at the margin or gum inflammation. So a crown does not remove the need for professional hygiene twice a year — it makes it essential.

The other cause of early replacement is bruxism. If you clench your teeth at night you need a protective night guard, otherwise the restoration will not see out its lifespan.

When a crown is not optional

A crown after root canal treatment

The question that comes up most often during planning is "could we just use a filling?" On a chewing tooth after root canal treatment the answer is usually no — and that is not an upsell.

Such a tooth has already lost a great deal of tissue: first to decay, then to the access cavity for the canals. The remaining walls are working at their limit and split under chewing load. The fracture often runs below the gum line — and at that point the tooth is not restored, it is extracted. Survival studies consistently show that teeth crowned after endodontic treatment last several times longer than those left under a filling.

A crown after endodontics is not "the next stage, if you feel like it" — it is part of the same treatment. We include it in the plan from the start so that you see the full amount, rather than finding out about it a year later.

On front teeth with only a small loss of tissue a good direct restoration is sometimes enough — we decide tooth by tooth.

Why hygiene comes before prosthetics

The margin of the crown has to sit exactly on the gum line. If the gums are inflamed and swollen, that line is different every day: take an impression today and, two weeks later once the inflammation has settled, the crown no longer sits where it was planned to. Plaque collects under an uneven margin, the gums become inflamed again, and the cycle does not break by itself.

That is why professional hygiene comes first. And then every six months — it is hygiene that decides whether the crown lives out its ten or fifteen years.

Advice for patients
We choose the restoration by clinical indication, not from a catalogue: first we assess the supporting teeth and the bone.
Do not rush the choice of material — the difference between zirconia and eMax only matters for a specific situation.
Regular hygiene extends the life of a restoration just as it does your own teeth.

Frequently asked questions

Questions and answers

Prosthetic work at Houston starts from UAH 7,200 (a zirconia crown or a veneer). The final price depends on the material and the amount of work, and is fixed in the treatment plan at the consultation.
Mild sensitivity for two to five days after fitting is a normal reaction. If the crown sits on a live tooth (one that has not had root canal treatment), it may be more sensitive to temperature. If the pain grows or has not gone within a week, come in for a check-up.
It depends how crooked. A slight rotation or tilt can be compensated for by a veneer. Serious misalignment calls for orthodontics first and veneers afterwards. Putting veneers on crooked teeth to mask an orthodontic problem is a bad idea: too much tooth is removed and the result is poor.
Zirconia and eMax crowns handle ordinary chewing without restriction. Avoid cracking nuts or bones with your teeth — that harms natural teeth too. With crowns on implants, do not open bottles or bite your nails. Otherwise: live normally.
Ceramic does not yellow or stain. But if you drink coffee and wine and smoke, the natural teeth around the veneers will yellow and a contrast appears. That is why we recommend regular professional cleaning after veneers, and cutting down on staining foods.
Replacing a crown is done under anaesthetic, so you feel nothing. It is usually needed after 15–20 years, or if a problem develops beneath it. Screw-retained crowns on implants (unlike cemented ones) can be replaced with no pain and no anaesthetic at all.
Usually six to ten on the upper jaw — that is the smile zone. Placing only two to four on the central teeth can leave a visible contrast with their neighbours. At the consultation the doctor will show you a 2D/3D mock-up, so you see the result before treatment begins.
