How long a crown lasts and what it depends on

Updated 2026-08-22 · Author: Oleksii Sydorenko, prosthodontist

The question always comes as “how many years”, and the honest answer is “depending on what”. Two identical zirconia crowns in two people can last five years and twenty — same material, same laboratory, same dentist. The difference is not the crown but what surrounds it: the state of the tooth beneath, the bite, and daily care.

Realistic timeframes by material

The figures below are not manufacturer guarantees but what we see at review appointments.

Zirconia — 15–20 years and more. The strongest of the common materials, rarely chips, handles chewing load well. The best choice for back teeth. From UAH 7,200.

eMax (lithium disilicate) — 10–15 years. It wins on aesthetics: it transmits light almost like natural enamel, which makes it the choice for front teeth. Slightly less load-resistant than zirconia. From UAH 12,200.

Metal-ceramic — 8–12 years. The old workhorse. It lasts, but over time the gum recedes and reveals a dark metal line. We rarely place it now.

A crown on an implant — 15–20 years. It has an advantage no natural tooth has: beneath it there is no nerve and no enamel, and therefore no decay. On the implant itself there is a separate article. UAH 16,100 (Megagen), 18,200 (Straumann).

The materials are compared in more detail in crown, veneer or zirconia.

The key thing to understand: crowns almost never simply “wear out”. In the great majority of cases replacement is needed not because the crown broke but because something happened to the tooth underneath.

What halves the lifespan

Decay at the crown margin. Cause number one. Plaque collects exactly along the edge where crown meets tooth. The tooth breaks down beneath it quietly: the crown is intact and holding, while inside there is nothing left. It shows up either on an X-ray or when the crown comes off with a piece of tooth attached.

Bruxism. Night-time clenching applies forces several times higher than chewing, sustained for hours. Ceramic chips and cement gives way. Without a guard, a crown in someone who grinds lasts roughly half as long.

An incorrect bite. When a crown takes more load than it should, it fails first. This usually shows itself in the same crown coming off repeatedly.

Gum inflammation. The gum recedes, exposing the crown margin and the root beneath — the beginning of the end both cosmetically and functionally.

A root-treated tooth left unprotected. A tooth without a nerve is more brittle, and if the crown does not cover it fully it splits.

Biting hard food with the front teeth. Nuts, ice, stones. One evening with pistachios and there is a chip on a front crown.

What extends a crown's life

In short: the same as for teeth, only more attentively.

An interdental brush daily. Not floss — a brush, because it cleans the crown margin where a toothbrush cannot reach. It is the cheapest item on this list and the most effective.

Professional hygiene every six months. That is where marginal decay is spotted while still the size of a dot. Six months is not an arbitrary figure: it is roughly how long plaque at the margin takes to mineralise.

A night guard if you grind. If you wake with tight jaws or a partner hears grinding, the guard pays for itself with one crown you did not have to replace.

A check X-ray every two or three years. Especially if the tooth beneath has no nerve. A lesion at the root tip grows for years without pain.

Do not bite hard food with the front teeth. Cut it with a knife — it sounds trivial, but that is exactly how most front crowns break.

Simple arithmetic: GBT hygiene from UAH 3,100 twice a year against a new crown from UAH 7,200. The saving does not come out ahead.

How to tell it is time to replace

A crown rarely announces itself. Watch for indirect signs.

A dark line along the gum edge. On metal-ceramic it is simply exposed metal. On zirconia it often indicates decay under the margin, and that means an X-ray.

Gums bleeding specifically around that crown. Usually means the margin has stopped sealing tightly.

Food catching between the crown and the next tooth. The contact has opened; it will not close on its own, and decay develops there quickly.

The tooth reacts to cold or to biting. If the tooth is vital, that may be decay beneath the crown. If it has no nerve, it may be a crack or a lesion at the root.

The crown moves or clicks. The cement has failed; do not wait, an unprotected core chips.

A ceramic chip. Not reliably repairable — a new crown is made.

An odour from under the crown. One of the most reliable early signals. A healthy margin does not smell.

Crowns are not replaced preventively. If a crown is fifteen years old, sits tightly, the gums are calm and the X-ray is clean, it keeps working.

What replacement costs

Replacement is not always “just a new crown”.

The old crown comes off. Sometimes it can be removed intact; more often it has to be cut off, since it would not go back anyway.

The tooth beneath is assessed. Decay is treated; a broken-down core needs a build-up from UAH 2,450; a lesion at the root means root canal retreatment first.

Then the new crown: zirconia from UAH 7,200, eMax from UAH 12,200.

So the real cost of a replacement is almost always higher than the crown's list price, and it can only be stated honestly after an X-ray. A consultation with a specialist costs UAH 690.

And separately: the price of a crown does not determine how long it lasts. The most expensive ceramic on a tooth with decay at the margin will outlive nothing; a budget zirconia in someone who attends hygiene appointments will outlast it. Money buys aesthetics here; longevity is bought with care.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a crown last on average?

Zirconia 15–20 years, eMax 10–15, metal-ceramic 8–12, a crown on an implant 15–20. But the spread within each figure is wide and depends on hygiene and bite.

Why are crowns replaced early?

Almost always not because of the crown but because of the tooth beneath: decay at the margin, a cracked core, a lesion at the root. Ceramic itself rarely wears out.

Which crown lasts longest?

Zirconia on back teeth, and a crown on an implant. The latter has a unique advantage: there is no tooth beneath it, and therefore no decay.

Should a crown be replaced preventively?

No. If it sits tightly, the gums are calm and the X-ray is clean, it keeps working however old it is.

How do I know it is time to replace it?

A dark line at the gum edge, bleeding specifically around it, food catching, the tooth reacting to cold or biting, mobility, a chip, or an odour from underneath.

Can a chipped crown be repaired?

Not reliably: bonded ceramic chips again in the same place. A new crown is made.

What does replacing a crown cost?

The new crown: zirconia from UAH 7,200, eMax from UAH 12,200. Plus, if needed, a core build-up from UAH 2,450 and treatment of the tooth. The exact figure comes after an X-ray.

Does bruxism shorten the lifespan?

Yes, roughly by half. Night-time clenching applies forces several times higher than chewing and sustains them for hours. A night guard solves it.

Can decay occur under a crown?

Yes, and it is the number one reason for replacement. Decay runs along the crown margin and develops painlessly until the tooth beneath breaks down. Hence the importance of cleaning the margin and six-monthly check-ups.

Have your crowns checked

The dentist will look at the margin, the gums and an X-ray and say whether replacement is needed or the crown still works. A consultation with a specialist costs UAH 690.
