Cosmetic tooth restoration: when it replaces a veneer
A chipped corner of a front tooth, a gap between the incisors, an old filling that has darkened and now shows a visible line — cosmetic restoration solves all of these. It is done in one visit, with composite, layer by layer, matching shades to the neighbouring teeth. The key difference from a veneer: the tooth is not cut down. Here is when restoration is enough, when it will not hold — and why the answer depends not on preference but on how much of your own tissue is left.
What it actually is
Cosmetic restoration means rebuilding the shape and colour of a tooth with composite directly in the mouth, in a single visit. The dentist applies the material in layers: first an opaque one imitating dentine, then more translucent ones behaving like enamel. It is that layering that makes the restoration invisible.
What separates it from an ordinary filling is not the material but the task. A filling seals a cavity on a back tooth, where what matters is a tight seal and correct cusp shape. Restoring a front tooth adds an aesthetic problem: translucency of the incisal edge, the shade near the gum, the surface texture. That takes longer and is harder, so it costs more.
At Houston restorative work is done under a microscope: the exact border of healthy tissue is visible, so sound enamel is not cut away «just in case».
What can be done in one visit
- A chipped corner or incisal edge. The commonest reason. Shape and edge translucency are rebuilt.
- A gap between the front teeth (diastema). Composite widens the side surfaces of the incisors. This is not orthodontics: the teeth stay where they are, only the shape changes.
- A darkened old filling. Over the years composite picks up stain and a grey line appears at the border.
- A wedge-shaped defect near the gum. An area where enamel has worn down to dentine — often sensitive to cold.
- An uneven edge after wear. Particularly with bruxism.
Restoration, veneer or crown
The choice is dictated not by preference but by how much of your own tissue remains and how much load the tooth takes.
Restoration suits a tooth that is largely intact with a small part missing. One visit, no cutting, the result is visible immediately. The downside: composite darkens and loses gloss over the years, so every few years it is polished or renewed.
A veneer is a thin ceramic shell on the front surface. It is made in a laboratory, takes two visits, and the tooth has to be lightly prepared. In exchange, ceramic does not stain and keeps its gloss for years. A pressed-ceramic veneer costs from UAH 17,600.
A crown is needed when little of the tooth is left: after root canal treatment, with major destruction, or with a crack. It covers the tooth completely and takes the load. Zirconia — from UAH 7,200, eMax — from UAH 12,200. More detail in the article on crowns, veneers and zirconia.
A simple rule: the more of your own tooth is left, the less invasive the solution can be. Start with the smallest intervention rather than the most expensive one.
How long it lasts and what that depends on
A restoration on a front tooth lasts longer than people expect — but only on three conditions.
- Hygiene. Plaque collects at the border between composite and tooth, and that is where secondary decay starts. Professional hygiene twice a year extends the lifespan more than any material choice.
- Load. If you clench at night, a restoration on a front tooth will chip. A night guard comes first, aesthetics second.
- Habits. Opening bottles, biting thread, holding pins between the teeth — these break composite and ceramic equally.
Composite darkens gradually: first it loses gloss, then it picks up stain from coffee, tea and wine. Polishing at a routine check-up restores the gloss and pushes back the moment when the restoration has to be redone.
What it costs
- Consultation with a specialist — UAH 690.
- Cosmetic restoration of a front tooth — UAH 6,800–9,000 per tooth.
- Decay treatment with a filling-restoration — UAH 2,350–3,900.
- Pressed-ceramic veneer — from UAH 17,600.
- Zirconia crown — from UAH 7,200, eMax — from UAH 12,200.
The gap between a restoration and a filling is a difference of task and chair time, not of material. A front tooth requires matching several shades, layering the composite and finishing the surface texture — noticeably more time in the chair.
Frequently asked questions
How does cosmetic restoration differ from an ordinary filling?
The material is similar, the task is not. A filling seals a cavity left by decay. Restoring a front tooth also reproduces edge translucency, the shade near the gum and the surface texture — longer, harder work, hence the higher price.
What does cosmetic restoration of a front tooth cost?
At Houston clinic — UAH 6,800–9,000 per tooth. The exact figure depends on how much has to be rebuilt and how many shades need matching. A consultation with examination costs UAH 690.
Is the tooth cut down for a restoration?
No. Only affected tissue and old material are removed; sound enamel is left alone. That is the main difference from a veneer, for which the tooth has to be lightly prepared.
How long does a cosmetic restoration last?
The lifespan depends on hygiene, load and habits rather than on the material. Composite gradually loses gloss and stains from coffee, tea and wine; polishing at a check-up restores the look and delays the need to redo it.
Restoration or veneer — which is better?
It depends on how much of your own tooth is left. A small chip or gap needs only a restoration, in one visit and without cutting. If the shape and colour of the whole tooth must change for the long term, ceramic is more stable because it does not stain.
Can a gap between the front teeth be closed with a restoration?
Yes — composite widens the side surfaces of the incisors, in a single visit. But the teeth stay where they are: if the gap is related to the bite, it is worth seeing an orthodontist first.
Can a tooth be restored after root canal treatment?
A front tooth often can, if enough walls remain. A back tooth without a nerve becomes brittle and usually needs a crown: a restoration does not withstand chewing load and the tooth splits.
