Clear aligners for children and teens: when they work and when they don't
Parents ask about aligners more and more often: the child doesn't want "metal on their teeth", and clear trays look like an easy answer. Sometimes they are. But in children's orthodontics aligners are a tool with clear limits, and an honest "yes or no" depends on age and on the individual case.
Can children have aligners at all
Yes, but differently at different ages. During the mixed dentition period, when baby teeth are still being replaced, plates, trainers and expanders usually do more — they guide the growth of the jaws. Full aligner courses work best in teenagers, once the permanent teeth have erupted: roughly from the age of 12–14.
When aligners are a good choice for a teenager
- Mild to moderate crowding, gaps between teeth, individual rotated teeth.
- The teenager is self-conscious about braces — with aligners, motivation to wear the appliance is far higher.
- Contact sport or wind instruments: the tray can be taken out for training or practice.
- Hygiene: trays come out and teeth are brushed as usual — with braces that is harder.
When aligners will not do the job
- Complex skeletal bite problems that require influencing jaw growth.
- Cases involving extractions and large tooth movements — braces are more reliable here.
- When discipline is lacking: a tray only works while it is on the teeth, 20–22 hours a day. A tray left out "until the evening" is treatment on pause.

What it costs
The cost of children's orthodontic treatment depends on the appliance and the complexity of the case; the exact figure comes from the orthodontist after an examination and diagnostics. A consultation with a treatment plan at Houston is UAH 690, a full aligner course starts from UAH 99,000. The full price list is on the prices page, and an overview of the field is on the orthodontics page.
How to tell it is time to see an orthodontist
Don't wait until every tooth has been replaced. Reasons to book a visit: the child breathes through the mouth, sucked a thumb or a dummy for a long time, the lower jaw is noticeably behind or in front of the upper one, teeth are erupting "in two rows". The first orthodontic check-up is recommended at 6–7 years — that is exactly when early problems are corrected with the simplest means.

Frequently asked questions
From what age can a child wear clear aligners?
Full aligner courses work best from about 12–14 years, once the permanent teeth have erupted. Earlier, during the mixed dentition period, plates, trainers and expanders are usually more effective because they guide jaw growth.
Are aligners better than braces for a teenager?
Not better or worse — different. Aligners handle mild to moderate crowding and gaps and are almost invisible, but they only work when worn 20–22 hours a day. For complex bite problems and large tooth movements braces are more predictable.
How much do aligners cost in Dnipro?
A full aligner course at Houston clinic starts from UAH 99,000; a consultation with an orthodontist including a treatment plan costs UAH 690. The exact figure depends on the complexity of the case and is given after diagnostics.
