BEYOND II Ultra whitening: how it works and how long it lasts
In-office whitening is not «apply gel and shine a light». It is a protocol with specific numbers: three cycles of 15–20 minutes, gum isolation, remineralisation afterwards. At Houston we work with the BEYOND II Ultra system — UAH 5,400 per session, 2–4 shades in an hour. Here is what happens in the chair, why hygiene comes first, how long the result lasts, and when whitening simply will not work.
What happens during those 60 minutes
The session consists of three cycles of 15–20 minutes under the lamp. Between them the dentist checks the result against the VITA shade guide — the same one used to record the starting colour.
- Preparation. The starting shade is recorded on VITA, the gums are isolated with a protective barrier and the dentinal tubules are sealed — this part is what keeps sharp sensitivity away.
- Gel and lamp. Original Beyond gel is applied and the lamp activates it. The light is cold, so the enamel does not overheat.
- Three cycles. After each one the gel is rinsed off and replaced. The dentist may stop earlier if the result is already there.
- Remineralising gel afterwards: minerals are put back into the enamel.
Gum and tubule protection and the remineralising gel are included in the session price — they are not extras.
Why examination and hygiene come first
Whitening is done only after an examination and professional hygiene — and that is not a way of selling one more procedure.
The gel acts on enamel. If there is plaque and calculus on the teeth, the gel works on those instead: the colour comes out patchy and part of the work is simply wasted. After GBT hygiene teeth often lighten by a shade or two already — sometimes that turns out to be enough and whitening is not needed at all.
The examination is needed for a different reason: gel must not be applied to teeth with decay, cracks or leaking fillings. Through a defect it reaches deeper, and instead of a whiter colour the person gets sharp pain. So treatment comes first, whitening second.
When whitening will not work
The honest part of the conversation, better had before payment than after.
- The tooth darkened from the inside. After trauma or root canal treatment the cause sits inside the tooth and an external gel will not reach it. Internal bleaching or restoration is what works here — covered separately in the article on why a tooth darkens.
- Crowns, veneers and fillings do not whiten. They are not enamel. After your own teeth are whitened they stay the same colour and become visible by contrast. If there are restorations in the smile zone, they are redone after whitening, to the new shade.
- Grey tetracycline staining responds worse than yellow: there will be a result, but a more modest one.
- Exposed necks and marked sensitivity — these are dealt with first.
How long it lasts and what to do about it
A year or more with ordinary care. Up to three to five years if the result is maintained with a home course and hygiene appointments are not skipped.
The colour does not come back suddenly but gradually, and the speed is mostly up to you: coffee, black tea, red wine, tomato-based sauces and smoking stain enamel a little every day.
For the first two days after the session the enamel is especially receptive, so a «white diet» is worth keeping: no coffee, wine, beetroot, soy sauce or dark berries.
In-office, home or the combined package
Houston offers three options, and they solve different problems.
- In-office BEYOND II Ultra — UAH 5,400 per session. The original system, three cycles of 15–20 minutes under the lamp, gum and tubule protection, remineralising gel afterwards, instructions. The result is visible the same day.
- Home course — UAH 21,000. Custom trays made from a digital impression, carbamide-peroxide gel at 7–15%, instructions. The trays are reusable. The effect builds gradually over the course.
- Combined «Beyond + home» package — UAH 26,500. A full in-office session, custom trays, 20 syringes of gel for a 4–5 week course, the option to buy more gel, and a check-up after two weeks.
The logic is simple: the in-office session delivers the result quickly, the home course holds it for longer. The package is for when you want both — and it gives the largest margin in shades.
Frequently asked questions
What does BEYOND whitening cost in Dnipro?
At Houston clinic an in-office BEYOND II Ultra session costs UAH 5,400. A home course with custom trays is UAH 21,000, and the combined in-office plus home package is UAH 26,500. Examination and professional hygiene are required beforehand.
How many shades does BEYOND II Ultra give in one session?
Two to four shades in 60 minutes. The exact result depends on the starting shade and the cause of the discolouration: yellowish teeth whiten better than grey ones. The shade is recorded on the VITA guide before and after.
Does whitening hurt?
The procedure is painless. Before the gel is applied the gums are isolated and the dentinal tubules are sealed, and a remineralising gel is applied afterwards — that is what prevents sharp sensitivity. Mild sensitivity for a day or two can happen and passes on its own.
How long does the result last?
A year or more with ordinary care, and up to three to five years if maintained with a home course and regular professional hygiene. How fast the colour returns depends on coffee, tea, wine and smoking.
Why can teeth not be whitened without hygiene first?
The gel acts on enamel, not on plaque. If there is plaque and calculus, the colour comes out patchy. After hygiene teeth often lighten by a shade or two by themselves — sometimes that is already enough.
Do crowns, veneers and fillings whiten?
No — they are not enamel and their colour does not change. Once your own teeth are whitened, restorations in the smile zone become noticeable, so they are redone after the procedure to match the new shade.
What if only one tooth has darkened?
The cause is most likely inside — after trauma or root canal treatment. External whitening will not help: internal bleaching or a restoration is needed. This is decided after an examination and an X-ray.
What should I avoid eating after whitening?
For the first two days the enamel is especially receptive to pigments. It is worth avoiding coffee, black tea, red wine, beetroot, soy sauce, dark berries and smoking.
